The Security Industry Authority (SIA), is an organisation that regulates the private security industry in the UK.

It acts as a non-departmental public body and is instrumental in the upkeep of compliance in the security industry.

What does the Security Industry Authority do?

The main responsibility of the SIA is to provide licences to individuals who are working in different sectors of the industry, allowing them to undertake certain tasks within regulations. This is an important role in the security industry due to the sensitive nature of work, and the SIA works according to the Private Security Industry Act 2001.

Prior to the creation of the licence in 2001, there was not compulsory security compliance measure in place for companies and individuals. The presence of a licencing scheme not only helps the company to hire the right people and be trusted by their clients, but it gives the customer a sense of security when a job is to be carried out.

In the private security industry, it is important to have strict regulations and the Security Industry Authority provides this for companies across the UK. Ensuring that those working within the field are kept in check brings a level of security and safety to the industry and it plays an important role in preventing any accidents or dangerous mistakes from occurring.

What are the licences?

The SIA provides two different types of licence. Each of these perform an important role in regulating those within the security industry.

The first type is for individuals working in the industry and this allows them to carry out important jobs. Failure to have a licence is a criminal offence and as such, this is an important step for those working in this field. The Front-line licence changes depending on the job, and this means that any individual with any job role in the field can get a licence that is suited to them and their needs. It fits with many roles including:

  • Door staff
  • Manned guarding
  • Security guarding
  • Close protection
  • Vehicle immobilising
  • Public space surveillance

The second type of licence is Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS). This assesses a company to ensure they abide by regulatory standards. The assessments are carried out by independent bodies and these are important licences to have. This non-front-line licence is given out to those who are employing others who engage in activities that require a licence.

The SIA works with the UK border agency to ensure that international individuals have a right to work within the industry.

The SIA is an important part of the security industry’s infrastructure and it is compulsory for anyone who wants to work in this field. Ensuring that those who are given these responsibilities remain compliant and safe is crucial, and has made a huge difference since its instrumentation in 2001. Only the best qualified, fit, and responsible individuals are approved for licences and this ensures that clients feel safe and secure when they hire individuals or companies for security in the UK.
